Bindaree Beef Abattoir - Bio-digester and Rendering Plant

Bindaree Beef Abattoir - Bio-digester and Rendering Plant

The Challenge:

Bindaree Beef is one of Australia's largest meat processors and a prominent leader in the Australian meat industry. It is a family owned and operated processing plant at Inverell in northern NSW capable of processing 1,300 cattle per day and employs over 600 people from the surrounding region.

Hanlons were appointed by Bindaree Beef to prepare a Preliminary Environmental Assessment (PEA) for lodgment with the Department of Planning and Infrastructure (DP&I) requesting the Director Generals Requirements (DGRs) for a new bi-digester plant and a new rendering plant at the existing abattoir site in Inverell, NSW.

The Solution:

Hanlons prepared a proposal for the Bindaree Beef project. This is a project consisting of a new, highly effective waste treatment system that will produce biogas, clean water and liquid fertiliser. It also has a biogas utilisation system that will generate power and steam for on-site use, and a replacement rendering plant that will use less electricity and steam.

The project is the first of its kind for the beef industry in Australia and will reduce the current carbon emitted by Bindaree Beef. Hanlons are proud to have been involved in this renewable energy project and look forward to continuing to work in the renewables sector.

Development consent for the project was issued by the Department of Planning on 10 December 2014.
